The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), to be held in Baku this month, will feature events organized in partnership with the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection. These events will involve representatives from various countries and international organizations will include in-depth discussions on topics such as human development, green jobs, decent work for all, and social protection.
The high-level meeting on "Investing in Human Development for a Climate-Resilient Future," scheduled for November 18, will focus on sharing best practices for investing in human development for a sustainable future in the face of climate change, as well as mobilizing commitments for these investments.
At the event, which will bring together ministers and high-level officials from various countries, UN agencies, and other international organizations, discussions will focus on the impacts of the transition to a climate-resilient economy on the labor market, enhancing the resilience of human capital to climate events through better social protection and improved skills, as well as the value of creating synergy between education, healthcare, employment, and skills in strengthening human development.
Priority topics will include productive employment and decent work for all, social support mechanisms, and the mobilization of efforts to strengthen investments in human development for a climate-resilient future.
On the same day, a high-level roundtable titled "Green Jobs and Skills" will address the development of workforce skills for green jobs and employment, as well as creating access to green jobs for vulnerable population groups. Cooperation in these areas and the need for more significant investments will be key subjects of discussion.
At the event titled "Protecting the Sustainability of Human Development: Mobilizing Climate Finance for Social Protection," discussions will focus on how climate finance can support vulnerable groups and the role of social protection in this context.
On November 20-21, the "From Theory to Practice for a Just Transition for All: High-Level Interregional South-South Political Dialogue" is also scheduled to take place. This event will address strengthening climate plans to promote green jobs, sustainable enterprises, and circular economy approaches during climate change and a just transition. It will also include discussions on knowledge and experience exchanges in these areas. Additionally, financial mechanisms and the implementation of the International Labour Organization's guidelines on a just transition to an environmentally sustainable economy in the energy sector will be among the key topics of discussion.
